Maokai Support guide

Maokai support is an engage tank built around Twisted Advance (W), Bramble Smash (Q), and Nature's Grasp (R): dash in untargetable with Twisted Advance to root the target, follow with Bramble Smash to knock back and slow everyone around them, then use Nature's Grasp to advance a wall of brambles through a choke point while Sap Magic (passive) heals him off attacks.

The build

Rune page: Aftershock, Font of Life, Bone Plating, and Unflinching (Resolve), with Biscuit Delivery and Cosmic Insight (Inspiration). Summoners: Flash and Ignite. Skill order opens Twisted Advance (W) at level 1, then maxes Bramble Smash (Q) first with Twisted Advance (W) second. Starter: two Health Potions, into Boots of Swiftness. Core build: Locket of the Iron Solari, Bandlepipes, Thornmail, with Solstice Sleigh, Celestial Opposition, and Bramble Vest as later options.

Ability mechanics

Twisted Advance (W) turns Maokai into a mass of moving roots, making him untargetable while he dashes to the target and rooting them on arrival. Bramble Smash (Q) knocks back nearby enemies with a shockwave, dealing damage and slowing them. Nature's Grasp (R) summons a wall of brambles that slowly advances, damaging and rooting anyone caught in its path. Sapling Toss (E) is more effective from brush.

Matchups

Hardest matchups by win rate: Thresh, Seraphine, Leona, Nautilus, Nami. Best matchups: Pyke, Lulu, Karma.
