How to contest vision in League of Legends

Contesting vision means taking map control from the enemy by clearing their wards and placing yours, and doing it as a team. Push your waves first so you can leave lane, walk into the area together with a sweeper and Control Wards, and never sweep deep alone when several enemies are missing. Vision you take with your team is safe; vision you take alone often costs a death.

What vision control is

Vision control is the difference between what your team can see and what the enemy can see. Every enemy ward you clear and every ward you place shifts that balance.

The team with more control can move, take objectives and set up picks, while the other team has to guess.

Push waves before you sweep

Leaving lane to clear wards while your wave crashes into your tower costs gold and sometimes the tower. Push the wave first, then move.

Pushed waves also put pressure on the enemy: they have to choose between catching their waves and defending their vision.

Sweep with your team

Clearing vision is one of the most dangerous jobs in the mid game, because the enemy knows where their wards are and often waits near them. The player who sweeps alone into the enemy jungle is an easy target.

Move in a group of two or three: one player sweeps, the others stay close enough to fight. If you find several enemies, you now have the information, and you can choose to fight or back off.

Use every tool

Oracle Lens reveals and disables nearby wards for a short time so you can destroy them. A Control Ward reveals and disables enemy wards around it and stays until it is destroyed. Some champions can reveal or clear wards with their abilities.

Combine these tools to clear an area fully, not just one ward, and then place your own wards so your team keeps the vision you took.

Know when to stop

If most of the enemy team is missing and you are already deep on their side of the map, the next brush is a risk, not an opportunity. Hold the vision you have taken and wait for your team before going further.

Common mistakes when contesting vision

Sweeping alone in the mid game while three or four enemies are off the map.

Letting a wave crash into your tower to clear a ward that did not matter much.

Clearing enemy wards and then not placing your own, so nobody has vision.

Frequently asked questions

How do I clear enemy wards in League?
Use Oracle Lens to reveal wards near you, or place a Control Ward to reveal and disable the ones around it, then attack them. Some champions can also reveal wards with their abilities.
Are Control Wards worth buying?
Yes. A Control Ward stays until it is destroyed and keeps denying enemy wards around it for as long as it lives. Each player can have one on the map at a time.
When should I switch to Oracle Lens?
Supports often switch once their support item gives them wards, and junglers often switch in the mid game. Any role can take it when the team needs more ward clearing.
Why do I die when I go to clear wards?
Usually because you go alone, into an area the enemy can see, while several enemies are missing. Push your wave first, bring a teammate, and check the minimap before walking into fog.
Is MOBA Trainer free?
The daily puzzle and the first lesson are free. The full campaign with every pattern is part of the Season Pass. MOBA Trainer runs on Windows, macOS, iPhone and Android, in the web app, and in Discord with the Moti bot.
