A trap works when the enemy cannot see you and has a reason to walk past you. Clear their wards in the area, hide your team in fog near something they want, like a wave, a camp or an objective, and wait for a carry to walk in. Without vision denial it is not a trap, it is just standing in a brush.

Deny their vision first
An ambush only works if the enemy does not know you are there. Before you hide, sweep the area and clear their wards with Oracle Lens and Control Wards. One enemy ward in the wrong brush turns your trap into a fight they can see coming.
Then place your own wards on the paths they will use, so you see them before they reach you.
Give them a reason to come
Enemies walk into traps when they want something: a side wave about to crash into their tower, a jungle camp that has respawned, a ward they want to place, or an objective they think is free.
Use that. Leave the wave or the objective in sight, and hide where they must walk to reach it.
Pick the target and the spot
The best traps catch the enemy carries, who die quickly and decide fights. Hide near the path they take, close enough that your crowd control reaches them before they can get away, and far from their teammates.
Know when to leave
A trap costs time. While your team waits in a brush, waves crash and camps sit unused. If nobody comes, or the enemy sweeps your area, stop waiting and take something else on the map.
