In the mid game, give spare farm to the champions who turn gold into the most power, usually the carries on your team. Side waves and jungle camps that nobody is using are free gold, so send the player who needs the next item most, while supports and tanks place vision and set up objectives. A wave or camp nobody takes is gold your team never gets.

1. Know who needs the gold
Some champions get much stronger with every item, others are useful at almost any gold. Marksmen and many mages need items to do their job, while tanks and supports can do theirs with less.
Give the farm to the player whose next item changes the next fight.
2. Do not let side waves die
A side wave that walks into a tower with nobody there is lost gold and lost pressure. Send someone to catch it: the carry if it is safe, or a solo laner who can push it and leave.
Catch the waves on the side of the next objective first, so the player can join the team in time.
3. Supports and tanks: make space instead
When a support takes a wave the carry could have farmed, the team loses value. The support time is better spent placing wards, clearing enemy vision and finding picks.
Junglers can also give a camp to a laner who is close and needs gold for an item, while they move to the next objective.
4. Put the carry where the gold is safe
After laning phase, the carry should farm where it is safe and close to the team, often mid lane with vision, while a stronger solo laner holds a side lane.
The carry gets their items, and the team stays near the next objective with its strongest fighters.
5. Gold only helps once you spend it
Farm you carry around is not power yet. When you have the gold for your next item, recall, buy it, and come back to the farm.
Count the gold your team left on the map
In a replay of the mid game, pause from time to time and count the waves and jungle camps nobody was taking. Each one is gold your team gave away.
Then check who took the farm that was taken. If your support has as much farm as your marksman, your gold is going to the wrong player.
Practice economy decisions
Economy optimisation is one of the 51 patterns on the MOBA Trainer Pattern Map. It has a video explanation from a coach and training puzzles built from real game situations: you see the map, choose what to do, and learn why the best players choose differently. The puzzles show the mid game map and ask who should take the farm and where each player should go.
Frequently asked questions
- Who should get the farm in League of Legends?
- The players whose champions turn gold into the most power, usually marksmen and mages. Spare side waves and jungle camps should go to whoever needs the next item most, while tanks and supports make space and place vision.
- Should supports take farm?
- Rarely when a carry could take it. A support gives the team more by warding, clearing enemy vision and finding picks. A support can take a wave that would otherwise be lost.
- How do I stop wasting waves in the mid game?
- Look at the map every time a fight ends and see which side waves are walking toward a tower. Send the player who is closest and safe, starting with the side of the next objective.
- How can I practice gold distribution?
- Count the wasted waves and camps in your replays, and train the decision with MOBA Trainer puzzles for the Economy optimisation pattern, where you choose who farms and where in real game situations.
- Is MOBA Trainer free?
- The daily puzzle and the first lesson are free. The full campaign with every pattern is part of the Season Pass. MOBA Trainer runs on Windows, macOS, iPhone and Android, plus the web app and the Discord bot.
