Wave management in League of Legends: push, slow push and freeze

Wave management means controlling where the minion waves meet in your lane. You have three tools: a fast push crashes the wave into the enemy tower, a slow push builds a big wave that crashes later, and a freeze holds the wave near your own tower. Choose the one that fits your next move: a recall, a roam, a dive, an objective, or denying your opponent farm.

1. Fast push: when you want to go somewhere

Kill the enemy minions as quickly as you can with abilities and attacks. The wave hits their tower, your opponent must farm under it, and you are free to recall, roam, help your jungler or move to an objective.

The cost is position: your wave ends on their side of the lane, so you are exposed if the enemy jungler is close. Push when you know where they are, or when your next move is ready to go.

2. Slow push: build a big wave

Only last hit, and kill the enemy caster minions first, so your side keeps more minions than theirs. Over the next waves your wave grows and then crashes into their tower all at once.

Use the big wave to take tower damage, to set up a dive with your jungler, or to recall while your opponent loses minions under their tower.

3. Freeze: hold the wave near your tower

A freeze keeps the wave just outside your tower range. You last hit only when a minion is about to die, and let the enemy side keep a few more minions than yours so the wave does not push.

Freeze when you are weaker, when your opponent has no escape, or when they just came back from a death or a recall. They have to walk far up the lane to farm, where your jungler can catch them. If your side gets too many minions, kill a few to keep the freeze.

4. Read where the wave goes next

A wave that crashes into a tower bounces back toward the other side. That is why a crash before a recall is good: by the time you return, the wave is coming toward you.

Think one or two waves ahead, not only about the wave in front of you. Most farm is lost when a player leaves the lane with the wave in the middle or pushing toward their own tower.

5. Waves after laning phase

In the mid game, waves are what let your team move. A pushed side wave forces an enemy to go and catch it, which gives your team more players at the next objective.

Push the side waves near an objective before you group there, not after. A team that groups with every lane pushed out arrives first and fights with an advantage.

Watch the wave, not your champion

Pick one replay and follow the minion wave in your lane instead of your champion. Each time you leave the lane, note where the wave was. If it was in the middle or pushing toward your tower, that is farm you gave away.

Then look at your deaths. Many of them happen with the wave pushed to the enemy side and no vision of their jungler.

Practice wave management

Wave management is one of the 51 patterns on the MOBA Trainer Pattern Map. It has a video explanation from a coach and training puzzles built from real game situations: you see the map, choose what to do, and learn why the best players choose differently. Each puzzle shows a lane and the map around it, and asks whether to push, slow push or freeze.

Frequently asked questions

What is wave management in League of Legends?
It is controlling where the minion waves meet in your lane by fast pushing, slow pushing or freezing, based on how strong your lane is and what is happening on the map, so the wave helps your farm and pressure instead of putting you in danger.
When should I freeze the wave?
When the wave is near your tower and you are weaker, when your opponent is easy to gank, or when they come back from a death or recall. A freeze makes them walk forward to farm, where they are exposed.
What is the difference between a slow push and a fast push?
A fast push clears the wave right away so you can leave the lane. A slow push lets your wave grow over several waves so it crashes into the enemy tower later and harder, which is good before a dive or a recall.
How can I practice wave management?
Watch the wave in your replays and train the decision with MOBA Trainer puzzles for the Wave management pattern, where you choose to push, slow push or freeze in real game situations.
Is MOBA Trainer free?
The daily puzzle and the first lesson are free. The full campaign with every pattern is part of the Season Pass. MOBA Trainer runs on Windows, macOS, iPhone and Android, plus the web app and the Discord bot.
