What is lane shifting in League of Legends?

Shifting means changing who plays which lane in the mid and late game, so each lane has the right player for it. Usually the carry who is weakest alone moves to the middle, where it is safer, and players who can survive alone take the side lanes. Done well, shifting keeps your carries alive, catches every wave, and leaves no lane empty.

Why lanes change in the mid game

After the first towers fall, the lanes you drafted for stop mattering as much. Side lanes become more dangerous because they're far from your team and have more fog around them.

Shifting puts the players who survive alone, or win duels, on the side lanes, and keeps carries who die easily closer to the team in mid.

A common shift

After the bot tower falls, the bot lane carry often moves to mid, where the tower is closer and the team is nearby. The mid laner or top laner takes the bot side wave instead.

The exact shift depends on your team. What matters is that each side wave is caught by someone who can survive there, and that the team stays close enough to help.

Shifting around objectives

Before dragon, shift toward the bot side so your team gets there first. Before Baron or Herald, shift top. The side wave furthest from the objective is the one you might let go.

Talk about it before you leave base. A shift where two players walk to the same lane leaves another lane empty and gives the enemy free towers.

Common shifting mistakes

Leaving a fragile carry alone in a side lane, letting side waves crash into your towers because nobody went, and two players catching the same wave are the usual mistakes.

In a replay of the mid game, check who caught each side wave. If your carry died alone on a side lane, ask who should have been there instead.

Frequently asked questions

What does shifting mean in League of Legends?
It means changing lane assignments in the mid and late game, so the right player is in each lane, carries stay safe, and side waves get caught.
Why does the ADC go mid after laning phase?
Because mid is closer to the team and safer than a side lane. A carry who dies easily alone is more useful near the team, while a player who survives alone catches the side wave.
What is the difference between shifting and a lane swap?
A lane swap usually happens early in the game to change matchups or objectives. Shifting happens in the mid and late game to balance pressure and keep carries safe.
