How to use Teleport in League of Legends

Use Teleport where it changes the most: back to lane when a wave is about to crash into your tower, or onto a fight or objective your team is about to win with one more player. Before you press it, check that the fight is still on, that you land on a safe side, and that leaving your lane does not cost more than you gain. A Teleport that arrives after the fight is over is a wasted summoner spell.

Teleport to swing a fight or an objective

The strongest Teleports turn an even fight into a won one: a bot lane dive, a skirmish in the river, or a dragon fight where your team needs one more player. Look at the map before the fight starts. If your jungler is heading bot and the enemy top laner has used their Teleport, your TP can be the difference.

Start the channel a little early when the fight is clearly coming, and cancel it if the fight falls apart. A Teleport that lands after your team has already lost the fight usually gives the enemy one more kill.

Teleport back to lane to save your farm

Early in the game, Teleport is often your way back to lane after a recall. Use it when a big wave is about to crash into your tower, or when you would lose too much farm and experience walking. Using it to save one small wave is rarely worth it.

Remember that a Teleport used to get back to lane is a Teleport you do not have for the next fight. If the enemy laner still has theirs, think about what they can do with it while yours is down.

Choose where to land

Landing behind the enemy team (a flank) can win a fight on its own, but it is also the riskiest place to stand while you channel. Landing on a ward, a minion or a tower just behind your team is safer and still adds you to the fight.

Good flank Teleports need vision. If you want to land behind the enemy, someone has to have a ward there first, and the enemy must not see it. Pinging your team before you go helps them fight at the right moment.

Know when to hold it

Sometimes the best Teleport is the one you keep. Holding it for the next objective fight, or to answer the enemy Teleport, can be worth more than using it for a small play now.

Watch the enemy Teleport too. If theirs is down and yours is up, you have a window to start a fight on the other side of the map.

Common Teleport mistakes

Teleporting into a fight that is already lost, landing in front of the enemy team, or using Teleport to save a tiny wave are the most common mistakes. Each one costs a summoner spell for little or nothing.

After a game, look at each of your Teleports. Ask whether you arrived in time, whether the fight was winnable, and what you would have done with Teleport if you had kept it.

Practice the decision on real game situations

Using teleport is one of the 51 patterns on MOBA Trainer's Pattern Map, in the Map movement group. It has a video explanation from a coach and training puzzles built from real game situations: you see the map, choose where to go, and learn why the best players choose differently.

Frequently asked questions

When should I use Teleport in League of Legends?
Use it when one more player changes a fight or an objective and you can arrive in time, or to get back to lane when a big wave is about to crash into your tower. Hold it when nothing important is happening and the next objective is close.
Is it better to Teleport into fights or back to lane?
Both are right at different times. Early on, Teleport often saves farm and experience. Once fights around dragon, Herald and towers start, a Teleport onto a winning fight usually matters more than one wave.
How do I stop my Teleport from getting cancelled?
Land on a ward, minion or tower that the enemy cannot reach quickly, usually behind your own team. Flank Teleports deep behind the enemy need vision they do not know about.
