How to play top lane in League of Legends

Top lane is a long, isolated lane where the wave and your trades decide almost everything. Good top laners control the wave so it works for them, trade only when they are stronger, and always know where the enemy jungler is. Later, they use teleport and side lane pressure to pull the enemy team apart while their team takes objectives.

1. Make the wave work for you

Top lane is the longest lane, so a wave pushed to the enemy tower leaves you far from safety. A wave near your own tower keeps you safe and makes the enemy walk further to farm.

Freeze near your tower when you are stronger or when the enemy jungler is nearby. Slow push before you recall or roam, and crash the wave into their tower so you lose nothing while you are gone.

2. Trade when you are stronger

Top lane matchups swing on small moments: who hits level 2 or level 3 first, whose key ability is on cooldown, who finished an item. A trade taken in the enemy's window usually loses.

Before you trade, check levels, cooldowns and items. Step in when you are ahead on one of them, and step back when they are.

3. Fight on level ups

Hitting the next level first gives you a new ability or more damage in the middle of a fight. In top lane, where levels come quickly from solo experience, this decides many early trades.

Watch the experience bars. If you will level first, start the trade just before it; if the enemy will, back off until the moment passes.

4. Track the enemy jungler

Most top lane deaths in the early game are ganks. The longer the lane, the more time the enemy jungler has to reach you while you stand forward.

Notice where the enemy jungler started and where they were last seen. Ward the river or tri-brush before they can arrive, and keep the wave on your side when you have no vision.

5. Use teleport where it changes the game

Teleport lets a top laner join a fight on the other side of the map. Used well, it wins dragon fights and bot lane skirmishes. Used carelessly, it leaves you behind in lane for nothing.

Push your wave before you teleport so you lose little in lane. Teleport to fights your team can win, and to a flank where the enemy cannot see you arrive.

6. Split push with a plan

In the mid game, a strong top laner can push a side lane alone and force enemies to come and stop them. That pressure opens the rest of the map for your team.

Split push when your team can hold or take something else at the same time, and when you know where the enemy is. If several enemies are missing, back off before they reach you.

7. Know your matchups and champion pool

Top lane has more one-versus-one matchups than any other lane, and some are very hard. Playing a few champions well beats playing many champions badly.

Pick two or three top laners, learn their hardest matchups, and check which picks are strong this patch.

Review your lane, not just your deaths

After a game, watch the first ten minutes of your lane in the replay. For each trade, ask who was stronger at that moment and where the wave was.

Then look at each teleport and each time you split pushed. Did it lead to an objective, or did you lose time? One or two habits will repeat across games; fix those first.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get better at top lane?
Control the wave so it works for you, trade only when you are stronger, track the enemy jungler, and in the mid game use teleport and split pushing to create pressure. Then review your lane after each game and practice the decisions you get wrong.
Should I freeze or push in top lane?
Freeze near your tower when you are stronger, when the enemy jungler is close, or when you want to deny farm. Push when you want to recall, roam, teleport or take plates, so the enemy has to deal with the wave while you are away.
When should I split push as a top laner?
When your team can hold the other side or take an objective at the same time, and when you can see enough of the enemy team to know you are safe. If most enemies are missing, back off.
How can I practice top lane?
Review your trades and teleports after each game, then practice the decision behind them. MOBA Trainer has a top lane path in its campaign with puzzles about waves, trades, teleport and split pushing.
Is MOBA Trainer free?
