Supports carry games through vision, timing and fights, not through gold. Good supports ward where the real threats are, trade with their ADC when the enemy is weak, and move to mid or the jungle when bot lane does not need them. Before every objective they place vision and clear enemy wards, and in fights they protect their carries or start the fight on the right target.

1. Ward where the threats are
A ward only matters if it shows something you need to know. Early on, that means the enemy jungler's path to bot lane; later, the routes to dragon and the next objective.
Place wards on the paths the enemy will take toward you or your objective. When a ward runs out, think about what you will not see before you replace it.
2. Trade together with your ADC
Bot lane is two against two. A support who starts a fight while the ADC is farming far away, or holds back while the ADC trades, loses the lane.
Fight when your ADC is next to you and ready, and when the enemy has used a key ability. Back off when your ADC is low or the enemy is at a power spike.
3. Roam when bot lane does not need you
After a recall, or when the bot wave is pushed into the enemy tower, a support can help mid or the jungler. A good roam creates a kill, a ward or an objective, and a bad one leaves the ADC alone in danger.
Roam when the wave is pushed and your ADC is safe. Tell your ADC before you leave, and go where the play is ready.
4. Set up vision before every objective
Dragon and Baron fights are often won by the team that sees the other first. The support places most of that vision.
Walk to the objective early with your jungler, clear enemy wards and place yours on the approach routes. Come back in time to fight with your team.
5. Take vision with your team, not alone
Supports who walk into dark jungle alone to ward are the easiest pick in the mid game. When several enemies are missing, the fog you are walking into is probably where they are.
Ward and sweep together with your jungler or a laner, or with a wave pushing in front of you. If no one can come, ward the safer spot.
6. Track summoner spells
Knowing when the enemy ADC or support used Flash tells you when a fight is easy to win. Supports often see these moments first.
Ping and note when key spells are used, especially Flash. Play aggressively while they are down, and tell your jungler too.
7. Protect or engage on the right target
In fights, an engage support starts the fight and a protective support keeps the carries alive. Either way, the target decides the fight.
If you engage, pick an enemy who is out of position or a carry who cannot escape. If you protect, stay near your ADC and save your abilities for whoever jumps on them.
Review your vision and your timing
After a game, open the replay before each objective. Was your vision placed before the enemy arrived, and where were you?
Then look at each roam. Did it lead to a kill, a ward or an objective, and was your ADC safe while you were gone? One or two habits will repeat; fix those first.
Practice support decisions, not just mechanics
Every fix on this page is a decision you can practice. MOBA Trainer has its own campaign path for each role: pick Support and the lessons and puzzles show real game situations from a Support player's view. Frequently asked questions
- How do I carry as a support?
- Through vision, timing and fights: ward the paths the enemy will take, trade with your ADC when the enemy is weak, roam when bot lane does not need you, set up vision before every objective, and in fights protect your carries or engage on the right target.
- Where should a support ward?
- On the paths the enemy will use to reach you or your next objective. Early on, that is the enemy jungler's route to bot lane; in the mid game, the routes to dragon, Baron and the side lanes.
- When should a support roam?
- When the bot wave is pushed into the enemy tower or after a recall, when your ADC is safe, and when mid or your jungler has a play ready. Tell your ADC before you leave.
- How can I practice support?
- Review your vision and roams after each game, then practice the decision behind them. MOBA Trainer has a support path in its campaign with puzzles about vision, trades, roams and fights.
- Is MOBA Trainer free?
- The daily puzzle and the first lesson are free. The full campaign with every pattern is part of the Season Pass. MOBA Trainer runs on Windows, macOS, iPhone and Android, in the web app and in Discord through the Moti bot.
