How to play ADC in League of Legends

An ADC wins games by staying alive and dealing damage for the whole fight. Good ADCs farm well, trade together with their support, and recall at the right time so they never fall behind on items. In teamfights, they stand behind their frontline and hit the closest safe target, instead of walking forward for one more attack.

1. Position so the enemy must go through your team

ADCs die in teamfights because they stand in front of their frontline, or walk forward to hit something out of reach. The enemy attacks whoever is closest, and that is often the ADC.

Stand where you can still hit something while the enemy must walk through your frontline to reach you. Know which enemy champions can jump on you, and keep that distance from them.

2. Hit the target you can reach safely

Trying to reach the enemy carry often means walking into their whole team. An ADC who keeps attacking the closest safe target usually deals more damage over the fight.

Attack the enemy who is in your range without stepping forward. Move to the carry only when the enemy frontline is down or out of position.

3. Trade together with your support

In bot lane, two against two decides most trades. An ADC who trades alone while the support is away or out of mana takes a bad fight.

Trade when your support is next to you and ready, and when the enemy support has used their key ability. Hold back when your support is warding or roaming.

4. Manage the bot wave

Your wave decides how safe you are. A wave pushed into the enemy tower leaves you open to ganks, and a big wave crashing into your tower costs you gold while you are away.

Push before you recall and before dragon spawns. When the enemy jungler is near and you have no vision, let the wave come to you.

5. Recall with enough gold and at the right time

ADCs depend on items more than most roles. Staying in lane with enough gold for a big item, or recalling as the wave crashes into your tower, can leave you behind.

Plan your recall with your support: push the wave, go home together when you have the gold, and come back before the next wave arrives.

6. Fight on your item spikes

An ADC grows a lot with each finished item. Fighting right after you complete one is very different from fighting just before.

Know when you and the enemy ADC finish your next items. Take fights after your spike, and avoid them just before it.

7. Play around dragon with your team

In the mid game, bot lane is close to dragon. The ADC who arrives late or alone to the river often dies before the fight starts.

Push your wave, recall with your support before dragon spawns, and walk to the pit with your team after vision is placed.

Review your fights, not just your farm

After a game, open the replay at each teamfight and each of your deaths. Where were you standing, and who reached you?

Then look at your recalls: how much gold did you bring home each time? One or two habits will repeat; fix those first.

Practice ADC decisions, not just last hits

Every fix on this page is a decision you can practice. MOBA Trainer has its own campaign path for each role: pick ADC and the lessons and puzzles show real game situations from a ADC player's view. You see the map, choose what to do, then learn why the best players choose differently. Each pattern above also has a coach video and puzzles on the Pattern Map.
