How to tower dive in League of Legends

Tower diving means attacking an enemy under their own tower. Dive when the enemy is low, your minions are under the tower to take its shots, and you have enough damage to kill fast and get out. The tower switches to any champion who damages an enemy champion in its range, so plan who takes the shots, and never dive without knowing where the enemy jungler is.

1. How tower aggro works

A tower attacks minions first. As soon as you damage an enemy champion in its range, it switches to you, and each shot in a row hits harder.

That is why dives are about planning: who hits first, who takes the shots, and when to walk out of range.

2. Set up the wave first

Your minions under the enemy tower give you time: the tower shoots them until a champion takes aggro. A big wave crashing into the tower is the classic moment to dive.

Slow pushing a big wave into the tower before the dive also keeps the enemy laner busy with farm.

3. Decide who takes the shots

The tankiest champion, or the one with the most health, should go in first and take the tower's attention. When they are low, they step out of range and the tower picks a new target.

In a two-person dive, the second champion goes in once the first has aggro, so the damage on each of you stays low.

4. When a dive is worth it

When the enemy is low on health, has no Flash, and has no help nearby. When the kill also gives you something: a tower, a dragon, or the lane under your control.

A dive that works can win a lane. A dive that fails gives the enemy two kills.

5. When not to dive

When you don't know where the enemy jungler or mid laner is. When the enemy has a big wave of their own minions coming. When your damage is not enough to kill before the tower kills you.

If in doubt, take the free farm, the plate or the push, and go again later.

Review the dives in your games

Find each dive, yours and the enemy's. Where was the wave, who took the tower shots, and who arrived to help?

Failed dives almost always miss one of these: the wave, the damage or the information about the enemy jungler.

Frequently asked questions

What is tower diving in League?
Tower diving is attacking an enemy champion under their own tower, accepting the tower's damage to get the kill.
When should I tower dive?
When the enemy is low, has no Flash or escape, your wave is under their tower to take its shots, you can kill fast, and no enemy help is close.
How does tower aggro work?
A tower attacks minions first, and switches to a champion who damages an enemy champion in its range. Its shots grow stronger on the same target, so swapping who takes them matters.
How do I avoid getting dove?
Don't let a big enemy wave crash into your tower while you are low, keep a ward to see the enemy jungler coming, and recall before you are low enough to dive.
