What is a win condition in League of Legends?

A win condition is the most reliable way your team can win this game, such as a carry who gets stronger over time, a split pusher who wins side lanes, or a team that wins grouped fights. Find your team's and the enemy's, then commit to the plan that plays to your strength and takes away theirs.

Common win conditions

Most win conditions fit a few shapes. A scaling team wins late, when its carries have their items. An early team wins by taking objectives before the enemy scales. A split pusher wins by pulling enemies to a side lane while the team takes objectives elsewhere. A teamfight team wins grouped five versus five fights. A pick team wins by catching one enemy alone.

A win condition can also be one player: the teammate who is far ahead, or the champion the enemy cannot deal with.

How to find yours

Start in champion select and loading: what does each team want, early or late, grouped or split? Then update it during the game. Look at who is ahead in gold and items, and which lanes are winning.

Ask what the enemy has no answer to. If they cannot stop your side laner one versus one, that is a win condition. If they have no way into your backline, grouped fights may be yours.

Deny the enemy's win condition

Knowing the enemy's plan is half the work. If they scale better, take objectives early and end before their carries are ready. If they want grouped fights, split the map and avoid five versus five.

If one enemy carry is their whole plan, put your vision, your crowd control and your attention on that player.

Commit to one plan

Many games are lost when a team switches plans every minute: some players group, some split, some farm. Pick the plan that gives you the best chance and play it together.

Win conditions change. A lead can be thrown and a losing lane can come back. Check again after every big fight or objective, and change the plan when the game changes.

Name the plan in every game

After a game, write one line for each team: how they wanted to win. Then check whether your team played to its plan, or tried several at once.

Over a few games you will see which shapes your champion pool fits, and which enemy plans you keep letting happen.

Practice choosing the plan

Win conditions is one of the 51 patterns on the MOBA Trainer Pattern Map. MOBA Trainer turns real game situations into puzzles: you see the map, choose what to do, and then learn why the best players choose differently. The pattern has a video explanation and training puzzles made by top players and coaches, so you can practice the decision in a few minutes a day, outside of ranked games.
