How to track ability cooldowns in League of Legends

Trade when the enemy's key ability is on cooldown and back off when it is ready. Most champions rely on one ability to trade, escape or start a fight, such as a dash, a stun or a shield. Watch for it, count the seconds after they use it, and step in before it comes back.

Find the key ability

In every matchup, one or two enemy abilities matter much more than the rest: the skillshot that stuns you, the dash they use to escape or engage, the shield that wins their trades. Those are the ones to track.

Before the game, or at the start of lane, ask yourself which ability you are afraid of. If you play the matchup often, you will learn it fast.

Count after they use it

Early in the game, abilities have long cooldowns because they are at a low rank. When the enemy uses or misses their key ability, you have a window of several seconds where they are much weaker.

Count in your head, or watch for the moment they would get it back. Cooldowns get shorter with ability ranks and ability haste from items, so the window shrinks as the game goes on.

Trade in the window

The best trades happen right after the enemy missed a skillshot or used their dash to farm. Walk up, use your own abilities, and step back before their cooldown is ready again.

Watch their mana too. A champion with no mana cannot use their abilities, whatever the cooldowns say.

Guard your own cooldowns

The same works against you. If you use your escape to farm a minion, you are open to a gank or a trade until it comes back. Keep your key ability for the moment it matters, and play safer while it is down.

Before you walk forward, check your own abilities: if your escape is on cooldown, the enemy jungler only needs one good moment.

Common mistakes

Trading too late is the most common one: by the time you walk up, the enemy has their ability back. The window is short, so decide fast.

The other is chasing the window into danger, such as walking into a big minion wave or under the enemy tower. A good trade is one you can step back from.

Review your lost trades

In a replay, find the trades you lost in lane and check what the enemy had ready. Most lost trades start when you walk up while their key ability is available.

Then find the moments they missed or wasted that ability and you did not punish it. Those moments are free trades you can take next game.

Frequently asked questions

How do I track enemy cooldowns in League?
Pick the one or two abilities that matter in the matchup, notice when the enemy uses or misses them, and count until they come back. Trade in that window and back off when it closes.
When is the best time to trade in lane?
Right after the enemy used or missed their key ability, when they are low on mana, or when you reach a level before them. Step back before their cooldowns are ready.
Do cooldowns change during the game?
Yes. Cooldowns get shorter as abilities rank up and as champions buy ability haste, so the windows are longest in the early game.
