How to play mid lane in League of Legends

Mid lane is the shortest lane and the center of the map, so what you do with your wave affects every other lane. Good mid laners push the wave when they can, then use that time to roam, help the jungler or set up an objective. They track the enemy mid laner when they leave, and they trade and fight on their own power spikes.

1. Win the wave to move first

In mid lane, the player whose wave crashes first is free to move. That freedom, called priority, lets you roam, join your jungler or reach the river before the enemy.

Push the wave when you plan to move, and arrive at the river right after it crashes. A roam without a pushed wave costs you farm and often a tower plate.

2. Roam with a reason

A good roam has a target: a side lane with the enemy pushed forward, a skirmish your jungler is starting, or an objective about to spawn.

Before you leave, check where the enemy mid laner is. If they can follow you or take your tower plates, the roam must be worth more than that.

3. Play with your jungler

The mid laner is usually the closest ally to the jungler. Skirmishes at the river and scuttle crab are often won by the side whose mid moves first.

Watch where your jungler is pathing, and keep your wave pushed when they come near. When they invade or fight at the river, be there before the enemy mid laner.

4. Track the enemy mid laner

When the enemy mid laner leaves lane and you do not notice, a side lane dies. Calling missing enemies and knowing where they went is part of playing mid.

If they disappear, ping it right away. Push the wave so they lose farm, or follow them if you can reach the same lane in time.

5. Trade on your power spikes

Mid laners are often strongest at specific moments: level 6, a completed item, an ultimate ready. Fighting the enemy in their window is a quick way to fall behind.

Before you trade, compare levels, cooldowns and items. Fight when you are ahead on one of them, and play for farm when they are.

6. Contest the mid wave in the mid game

After the first towers fall, the mid wave decides which team can move to the next objective. If the enemy holds mid, your team walks to every fight late.

Before an objective, push the mid wave with your team. A pushed mid wave means the enemy must answer it or let you take something for free.

7. Position for teamfights

Many mid laners deal most of their damage in fights, but they are also easy targets when they stand too far forward.

Stand where you can still reach your targets while the enemy must go through your frontline to reach you. Know which enemy champions can reach you, and keep that distance.

Review your movements, not just your lane

After a game, watch the replay at each moment your wave crashed. What did you do next: farm, roam, help the jungler or recall?

Then look at each time the enemy mid laner disappeared. Did you notice, and did a side lane pay for it? One or two habits will repeat; fix those first.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get better at mid lane?
Push your wave so you can move first, then roam or help your jungler with a clear target. Track the enemy mid laner, trade on your power spikes and position safely in fights. Then review your movements after each game and practice the decisions you get wrong.
When should I roam as a mid laner?
After you push your wave, when a side lane has the enemy pushed forward, when your jungler is starting a play, or when an objective is about to spawn. Check that the enemy mid laner cannot punish you with farm or tower plates first.
What should I do when the enemy mid laner roams?
Ping it right away so your side lanes back off. Then push the wave to take farm and plates, or follow them if you can reach the same lane in time.
How can I practice mid lane?
Review your roams and trades after each game, then practice the decision behind them. MOBA Trainer has a mid lane path in its campaign with puzzles about priority, roams, power spikes and positioning.
