How to know if you can win a fight in League of Legends

Before you fight, compare what both sides have right now: how many players can join in time, levels and items, health and mana, and which ultimates and summoner spells are up. Add who has vision of the area and whose champions suit the ground. If most of these favour you, take the fight; if most favour the enemy, back off and wait for your moment.

1. The things that decide a fight

Fights are rarely random. They are decided by a short list of things you can see before they start: numbers, levels, items, cooldowns, health, vision and the fit of each team's champions to the place of the fight.

Players who win more fights are not always better at mechanics. They are better at taking only the fights this list says they win.

2. Numbers and who can arrive

Count the players close to the fight, then the ones who can arrive: a laner walking over, a teleport, a jungler nearby. A fight that starts three against three can end three against five.

3. Levels, items and power spikes

A level can mean one more ability or an ultimate. A completed item can change a champion's damage a lot. Before a fight, check the scoreboard for levels and items, and remember who just recalled with gold.

Fight when you are on your spike and they are not yet on theirs.

4. Ultimates and summoner spells

An enemy with their engage ultimate or Flash down is much weaker in the next fight. Keep track of what they used in the last fight and when.

The same goes for your side: if your key ultimate is down, the fight can wait until it is back.

5. Health, mana and vision

A team that just took a fight or a lot of poke is often too low to fight again. And a team that sees the other walk in, while staying hidden itself, starts the fight with an advantage.

6. Make the call fast

In game, there is no time to count everything. Train yourself to check the three or four biggest things in a second: numbers, levels, ultimates and health. With practice, the call becomes a habit.

Review your fight calls

In a replay, pause right before each fight. Using the list above, who should have won? Then watch who did.

When the result surprised you, find what you missed: a teleport, an item, a missing enemy. That is the thing to check next time.

Practice predicting fights

MOBA Trainer turns real game situations into puzzles: you see the map, choose the play, and learn what the best players would do and why. Fight outcome prediction has its own video explanation and training puzzles on the Pattern Map, made by top players and coaches, next to the other fighting patterns.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I can win a fight in League?
Compare numbers, levels, items, health and mana, and which ultimates and summoner spells are up on each side. Then add vision and where the fight happens. If most favour you, fight.
Where can I see enemy items and levels?
On the scoreboard (Tab by default). It shows each champion's items and level, so you can compare them with your team before a fight.
Why do I lose fights I think I should win?
Usually because something was missed: an enemy who could arrive, a power spike they just bought, or a key ultimate that was up. Review the fight and find what you did not count.
Is this the same as knowing power spikes?
Power spikes are a big part of it, but fight prediction also includes numbers, cooldowns, health and vision. MOBA Trainer trains power spikes and fight prediction as separate patterns.
Is MOBA Trainer free?
The daily puzzle and the first lesson are free. The full campaign with every pattern is part of the Season Pass, at $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year. MOBA Trainer runs on Windows, macOS, iPhone and Android, in the web app and as the Discord bot Moti, in 12 languages.
