Respect his R

His R (Nether Grasp) suppresses you in place: basically irrelevant 1v1, but deadly in ganks and teamfights, so ward and track before committing; in a straight 1v1 you can W-buffer to cancel his cast.

Break his shield

E1 onto him (or Tiamat) to proc and pop his passive shield, then hold your damage until the shield wears off before you all-in: it blocks CC and heavily reduces damage while up.

Your kill window

Once you chunk him at level 2/3 you can kill him with W, dash or Flash up: abuse your early game and run him down when he's below 50% HP.

Never fight near his team where Malzahar can catch you with R: Nether Grasp is his only real way to lock you down and set up a shutdown.
